THE HISTORY OF THE OBJECT. The General Electric Company plc, known by the acronym GEC, was a British defense electronics, telecommunications and engineering company. It was founded in 1886 in London as The General Electric Apparatus Company by two German immigrants Gustav Biswanger and Hugo Hirst. It became General Electric Company in 1889, and the company rapidly expanded, creating several subsidiaries and factories. In 1893 GEC specialized in the production of light bulbs, the filaments of which were supplied by the German company which would become OSRAM starting from 1909. With the rapid growth of private and commercial use of electricity ensuring demand, the company expanded its presence both at home and abroad, with the establishment of agencies in Europe, Japan, Australia, South Africa, India and a substantial export trade to South America. Further development of the company occurred in the period between the two world wars, when the company dedicated itself to war production. In 1940 GEC contributed to the development of the magnetron for radar with physicists John Randall and Harry Boot at the University of Birmingham, and to those of vacuum tubes. During the post-war period, GEC continued its expansion policy, through various acquisitions and mergers of other companies, such as Associated Electrical Industries (AEI) which includes the civil electronics and household appliances sector, and other important companies such as Elliott Brothers , the Marconi Company and others. GEC thus became the largest company in the United Kingdom in the 1970s. In 1981 it entered the electro-medical equipment sector with the acquisition of the US Picker Corporation. In 1984 GEC entered the FTSE 100 Index, ranking third behind British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell. In 1988, together with the German Siemens AG, it created a joint company called GEC-Siemens plc, and in 1989 it created a joint venture with the French CGE, GEC-Alstom. Other important acquisitions by GEC were made in the nineties, those of Ferranti and Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering. In 1998 the radar and avionics sector merged with that of the Italian Alenia Aeronautica, giving life to Alenia Marconi Systems. In the same year it acquired the US defense company Tracor. The company ceased to exist in 1999 when it was acquired by Marconi.
